Shopify Shop MCP and Amazon’s seller agents: how AI agents are becoming an e-commerce sales channel

Shopify opened its catalogue to every AI agent with Shop MCP, and Amazon turned its seller assistant into an agent. How sellers should prepare product data and channel settings.

Short answer

On 13 October 2026 Shopify released Shop MCP: any AI agent that supports the Model Context Protocol can now search the Shopify catalogue, build a cart and complete checkout with Shop Pay inside the agent. Amazon has turned Seller Assistant into an agent that acts on the seller’s behalf. For sellers, the priority is product data clear enough for machines to read, and knowing which agent channels they are open to.

What happened: Shopify opened its catalogue and checkout to agents

According to Shopify’s developer changelog, Shop MCP, released on 13 October 2026, lets AI agents shop Shopify stores through a single MCP server. Agents can search products, retrieve product details, build carts, complete checkout and look up order status for signed-in users (Shopify).

Previously, agents could discover products but had to send shoppers elsewhere to buy. With Shop MCP, a signed-in shopper can pay with saved Shop Pay details without leaving the agent. Shopify states that orders placed through an agent appear in the merchant’s admin like any other order. The changelog names Claude and ChatGPT as MCP clients that run the sign-in flow.

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open protocol that lets AI assistants connect to external tools and data sources in a standard way. When a store or platform offers an MCP server, every assistant that supports the protocol can use the same tools.

The other parts of Shopify’s agent strategy

Two weeks before Shop MCP, on 1 October, Shopify introduced Canvas, which lets merchants design their store by chatting with its AI assistant Sidekick. According to TechCrunch, Canvas is desktop-only for now, and the first version does not support third-party themes, app blocks, markets or translations (TechCrunch).

The Keyword reports that products reach agent channels automatically through Shopify Catalog. Merchants can remove catalogue access for individual channels such as ChatGPT, but the changelog does not clearly mention a separate fee or a full opt-out for Shop MCP (The Keyword).

Amazon’s side: the seller assistant becomes an agent

Amazon’s Accelerate 2026 recap says Seller Assistant now monitors the business continuously and can act on its own within limits the seller sets. A new plugin connects Seller Central data to Amazon Quick and, in beta for US sellers, to Anthropic’s Claude. Amazon says new campaigns using auto-optimisation reached their first sale 40% faster (Amazon Selling Partners).

Amazon also announced multichannel tools that let sellers connect eBay, Shopify, TikTok and Walmart accounts to Seller Central and see orders in one place. According to PPC Land, they roll out gradually to the US store over the coming months at no extra cost; one-edit listing updates across channels and a cross-channel profitability dashboard come later (PPC Land).

What it means for sellers

Product data is the new storefront

An AI agent chooses a product from structured data, not from photos or design. Product type and key attribute in the title, separate and accurate stock for every variant, a clear price, delivery time and return conditions are what the agent decides on. This data must match the structured data on your site; see our Schema.org guide for e-commerce for details.

Review your channel settings

Your products may be open to agent channels by default. Check in Shopify admin which channels access your catalogue. If you do not want to appear in some channels for brand or pricing reasons, remove access there.

Prepare multichannel operations for the agent era

When Amazon’s multichannel tools reach Germany, sellers who manage stock and orders from a single source will have the advantage. Setting up inventory sync between Shopify, Amazon and Kaufland today prepares you for both agent channels and marketplaces; our Shopify marketplace integration article explains the setup step by step.

What to do this week

  1. Check title, variant, stock and price data for your 20 best-selling Shopify products and fill in missing attributes.
  2. Test that Product and Offer structured data on product pages is correct.
  3. Review catalogue access settings for agent channels in Shopify admin.
  4. State delivery times and return conditions clearly and consistently on every product.
  5. Watch for the new Seller Assistant features launching in Germany and define the agent’s approval rules in advance.

Key takeaways

  • Shop MCP offers product search, product details, cart, checkout and order tracking tools through one MCP server.
  • Orders placed through an agent appear in Shopify admin like any other order; no separate process is needed.
  • Products reach agent channels automatically through Shopify Catalog; merchants can remove access for individual channels.
  • Amazon’s multichannel tools and seller agent launch in the US first; there is no timeline for Germany.
  • Agents choose products from data: complete titles, variants, stock, price, shipping and returns are the precondition for visibility.

Frequently asked questions
